Amazon.co.uk Review In his aim to make an honest film about sex, John Cameron Mitchell (Hedwig and the Angry Inch) has taken a somewhat documentary approach to Shortbus, a film describing various New Yorkers' sexual pathos. Framed by shots roving a homemade diorama of the city, Shortbus is comprised of vignettes featuring actors who helped craft this story of people's disconnect in sexual endeavors. Jamie (PJ DeBoy) and James (Paul Dawson), a gay couple experiencing a lull in their relationship, visit Sophia (Sook-Yin Lee), a sex therapist whose inability to orgasm results in her clients inviting her to a sex club after which the film is titled. Sophia's husband, Rob (Raphael Barker), is also willing to experiment, so the two independently embark on adventures in self-pleasure. Dominatrix Severin (Lindsay Beamish) plays a crucial role in Sophia and Rob's lives, as her search for real humanity overlaps with their desire for passion. As each character's plot complicates, the viewer sees a similar melancholy bulldozing its way into these seemingly disparate lives. The depression is repeatedly used in comedic scenes, such as when James is asked on a date while still hospitalised for his attempted suicide. Yo La Tengo's score, which includes Animal Collective among others, lends this film a graceful ambience. Unlike porn, Shortbus has a resonance that encourages the viewer to consider one's own sex life as an important aspect of happiness. --Trinie Dalton

BEWARE!! THIS IS A CENSORED VERSION OF THE FILM August 7, 2010 - 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Beware! I thought this would be the uncut version since.. well, why not? It is the only copy sold in the UK. But this is a heavily censored version, missing over 4 minutes of scenes (5% of the movie) from the American *RATED* version - I haven't seen the unrated American version so it is missing even more from that.
BEWARE! No point in seeing the censored version of this movie. Some of the scenes don't make any sense.
I Love This Film! July 15, 2010 Joe M This is such a unique and funny film. I randomly bought it thinking it would be only half decent but its so much more. It's witty, sexy, emotional and has some really hilarious laugh out loud moments. If you like the look of the trailer buy it.
Worth seeing once, but that's about it April 2, 2010 Brighton Breezy 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
I'm glad the film was made, at last we're living in an age where the BBFC will treat us as adults (well, more than a few years ago anyway) and let us make up our own minds. I didn't find the film particularly engaging though and did not really empathise with the characters on any level. The sexual activity is neither "shocking" or "gratuitous" as certain reviews would have you believe, but it does not add much to the story either. Take it out and it would be an average PG/12A romantic "comedy".
Personally I think that because it is only very recently that explicit sexual activity has been allowed to appear on our screens, writers and directors don't quite know what direction to take with it. Actors themselves have to be extraordinarily brave to take part in it because of the damage it may (wrongly in my opinion) cause to their careers.
In short, it's an important film in terms of pushing the boundaries of what can be screened, and is worth seeing on that basis, but it's just not particularly good as entertainment. Not awful, just average.
No thank you; an uninteresting, poor film. March 18, 2010 N. Thompson (Hull, England) 2 out of 6 found this review helpful
I know its an indie-film and should be judged as such but this film has nothing really to offer. It trys to shock but completely fails to deliver. If you want to buy this simply because of the real-sex; dont bother unless you like homosexual sex. For me; a straight man (but not homophobic) then the sex scenes are uninteresting and more of a turn-off. The characters are fundamentally uninteresting and not very likeable. The dialogue doesnt hold your interest and there seems nothing to interest your average viewer.
Mostly gay sex February 16, 2010 warren (Wales UK) 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
I was hoping for much more from this film than it delivers. I think the director could achieve more but fails in all but two scenes; which are hardley worth waiting for. However if you like gay male sex you might enjoy it.
