Would Shakespeare Approve? June 24, 2010 JL Merrow (UK) Well, I'm fairly sure Kit Marlowe would. An absolute delight. A Midsummer Night's Dream is a strong theme, and fits this film perfectly. Slightly slow start - but by the end, you'll be wishing it were longer.
A real feel-good movie, despite the fact that it doesn't gloss over the difficulties facing young gays and, yes, their families.
Magical and Whimsical Charmer May 20, 2010 Louis B. Grobbelaar (George, South Africa) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
It's not often that I write reviews, but watching "Were the World Mine" was just such a great experience that I couldn't pass on the opportunity to share my opinion of it with other people.
I have quite a wide selection of indie and gay interest, and I must say; I did not expect too much from this film. The trailer looked interesting, but would how would it compare to excellent films like Shelter or Summerstorm?
Well, all I can say, is that while the production values may not necessarily reflect the budget of say Shelter, this film is simply a must-have! I couldn't wait to share it with all my friends, and I've already seen it with a gay friend, my straight best friend and plan to share it with even more people. They all loved it too, by the way! That's what I love about this film. It might be gay-interest, but it's not explicit in any way, and can be viewed by any reasonably open-minded person.
The songs are catchy, have nice lyrics and the choreography and set design is simply stunning! I especially loved the first song; Audition/Be as thou wast wont, but as the film progresses I couln't help but to fall in love with every song. I just loved the dreamy, whimsical feel of the movie too, especially when Timothy daydreams. And ooh, does he daydream! The fact that Timothy is played by the gorgeous Tanner Cohen is certainly a plus point too. And boy; can the guy sing!
Other characters I especially liked were the teacher Ms Tebbit, the Mom's boss crazy boss Nora, Hot jock Jonathan Timothy crushes on, and Timothy's mother. Like the mom of every gay teenager she tries to understand him, and although it's not always easy, she makes the effort to accept him for who he is. That is the message I took out of this film; "Be as thou wast wont", and also "Awaken and empower what is within". Beautiful!!!
And oh, being a sucker for happy endings, I could find nothing wrong with the conclusion of "Were the World Mine"...
Fantastic May 17, 2010 Ms. Sj Noble (Belfast, Northren Ireland) Good musical scores. funny yet heart warming, the characters are loveable. It's a feel good happy movie. And it's a good musical with the right type of mood. It's something that you could throw your feet up on the sofa and watch. I enjoyed it very much.
Loved this film and the music was great March 29, 2010 Sottish guy (scotland) This was the best film I had seen in ages. The actors were easy to follow and the music was great. I would recommend this 100% to anyone.
Be careful what you wish for... March 28, 2010 Philip Pearson (England) Were the World Mine? Be careful what you wish for!
Previous reviews go into such detail, what can I usefully add?
One of the most clever and innovative adaptations of MSND; I believe Shakespeare himself would have applauded and enjoyed this DVD.
This a really challenging piece of acting and the cast, particularly the lead, do the play justice. By setting in the present day and incorporating a gay twist, this makes MSND entertaining and thought-provoking. Well done!
Must watch again...
