Would I cast such a spell?........Certainly! March 3, 2010 Kurt Clare (South Africa) This is an exceptional adaption of Shakespeare's "Midsummer Night's Dream", with an equally compelling exploration of normative sexuality cast asunder. If we were to be presented with the opportunity to cast a spell on all society, causing them to fall in love with the first person they see, would we all not realise how arbitrary normative sexuality really is and that love is really the only reason?
The look and feel of the film is somewhat reminiscent of "Dead Poet's Society", with a similar undercurrent of tragedy and angst. Timothy is an openly gay student who along with his single mother, is merely trying to find a place for himself in a world that seems to be obsessed with the mundane and arbitrary. Like many students in his position, Timothy suffers the indignity of being bullied and yet manages to hold himself above such.
His teacher (masterfully played by Wendy Robie) begins to stir the proverbial pot, and introduces Shakespeare's play to the entire senior class. All are required to participate, and slowly the edges of what seems stable, normal and fixed, start to crumble. What emerges is a constructive commentary on what constitutes 'normal' and the impact societal demands and ignorance can have on the innocence of youth.
Whilst I am no fan of the musical genre, I found myself completely absorbed by this film. The actors are all superb, and in particular Wendy Robie of whom I had never heard before. In short, a well thought out adaption, done with taste and a significant attention to detail.
Well worth your money.
Wonderful musical, more insight on how a young gay feels that you might think February 24, 2010 ansurpiranus (madrid, spain) So you have here a musical we saw on a gay and lesbian film festival and which greatly impressed us. Wonderfully characterized by excellent young and not so young actors, and more important, with a wonderful plot which transposes "A midsummer night dream" into a typical High School plot with a young gay man as the main character. Good music, lots of fun in the plot, and much to think about, more if you had the experience of feeling gay in that period of your life. The question will remain for generations to come: what if you have a magic wand to change your world...
Super for softies January 24, 2010 D. Padbury This is a lovely film for those of a romantic disposition. Cleverly re-working Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream, writer/director Tom Gustafson has brought an 'Aaah' factor to a gay love story. The songs are memorable and beautifully written and the performances superb. Who knows, it might even change the minds of some homophobes...
Pure escapism January 20, 2010 Geoff Flint (Stafford, England) At the end of a busy day just make your dinner, pour a glass of wine , put your feet up and pop WERE THE WORLD MINE into your dvd. Its a gentle, beautiful film which won't stretch your brain cells, a delightful fantasy of gay romance.
Would we watch it a second time? - sure. Would we give the film to friends for a present? ... yes. Would YOU enjoy it? - only if you like the genre.
not bad December 23, 2009 Radoslaw Rokita (Belgium) 0 out of 3 found this review helpful
Nothing extra ordinary. I would say quite trivial but i assume it was the purpose of that movie.
