I live in a very hard water area and found no discolouration. All I do is give it a quick wipe with a tea towel over the lens area straight after use.
Not a problem with reading it either, but I am using a gentle rolling boil. I found it to be accurate and consistent, which allows me to enjoy eggs exactly as I like them, every time. Gone are the days when I have given it 1 min too long and lost all my dipping yolk!.
Cheap, cheerful and a good addition if you like soft/medium boiled eggs.

It's better than nothing as it gives some indication of what the egg's gonna come out like but I found it difficult to determine when the colour change had hit the 'soft' line. I still ended up looking at the clock anyway. Maybe that says more about me than the egg timer, I don't know.

I followed the instructions to the letter, but found that my soft boiled eggs were nearly all medium to hard. So a little disappointing for the first use. However...I will try again. Perhaps it would be better with fewer eggs...I needed a dozen perfectly cooked soft boiled eggs all at the same time. I won't give up!
